Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)

A career as a professional pilot offers a wide range of opportunities. Many students start there career with either bush/float flying or flight instructing. Other exciting opportunities include:

PRIVILEGES

With Commercial Pilot Licence you’ll be able to fly an aircraft for hire or reward.

ADDITIONAL RATINGS/PRIVILEGES

Additional privileges may be added to your Commercial Pilot Licence. Some of the following ratings may also be completed during the CPL training.

  • Instrument rating
  • Multi-engine rating
  • Seaplane/Float rating
  • Instructor rating

PREREQUISITES

Private Pilot Licence

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Flight Experience

200 hours total flight time including:

  • 100 hours PIC
    • 20 hours PIC cross-country
  • 65 hours CPL training (see details below)

CPL Flight Training

65 hours total flight time completed after the issuance of a Private Pilot Licence which includes:

  • 35 hours of dual instruction with a certified flight instructor
    • 5 hours of night training (local flights and cross-country)
    • 5 hours of cross-country training (including 2 hours at night)
    • 20 hours of instrument training
  • 30 hours of solo flight time
    • 5 hours of night flight time
    • 25 hours flight time emphasizing the improvement of general flying skills
    • 300 nautical mile cross-country

The flight times listed above are the minimum requirements to obtain a Canadian Commercial Pilot licence. 

Ground School

80 hours of ground school covering:

  • Meteorology and aviation weather forecasts
  • Aircraft engines, systems and flight instruments
  • Canadian Aviation Regulations and licensing requirements
  • Navigational theory, navigational aids including GPS and cross-country planning
  • Flight operations
  • Human factors and pilot decision making

Examinations

Age

Flight training and ground school may be started at any age; however the minimum age to obtain a Canadian Commercial Pilot licence is 18 years old.

Medical Requirements

All pilots are required to complete an aviation medical with a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner. A category 1 aviation medical is required for the Commercial Pilot Licence.
