Private Pilot Licence (PPL)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Whether flying for personal pleasure or pursuing a career as a Commercial Pilot your flight training will begin with the Private Pilot Licence.
Flight Training
45 hours total flight time which includes:
- 17 hours of dual instruction with a certified flight instructor
- 5 hours of instrument flight time
- 3 hours of cross-country training
- 12 hours of solo flight
- 5 hours of cross-country experience
The flight times listed above are the minimum requirements to obtain a Canadian Private Pilot licence. On average a student pilot will require more flying time to achieve the proficiency necessary to pass the flight test. The Canadian average to obtain a Private Pilot Licence is between 60 and 65 hours.
Ground School
40 hours of ground school covering:
- Meteorology and aviation weather forecasts
- Aircraft engines, systems and flight instruments
- Canadian Aviation Regulations and licensing requirements
- Navigational theory, navigational aids including GPS and cross-country planning
- Flight operations
- Human factors and pilot decision making
Examinations
- PSTAR (pre-solo exam)
- Radio Exam
- Transport Canada written exam
- Transport Canada flight test
- Transport Canada Aviation Language Proficiency exam
Age
Flight training and ground school may be started at any age; however the minimum age to obtain a Canadian Private Pilot licence is 17 years old.
Medical Requirements
All pilots are required to complete an aviation medical with a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner. A category 3 or 1 Aviation Medical is required prior to solo flight training.
