Instructor Rating

An instructor’s rating is a requirement for anyone looking to teach ab initio flight training. It is often the first step for many commercial pilots when beginning their career in aviation.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Flight Training

30 hours total flight time which includes:

  • 30 hours of instructor training
    • 5 hours of instrument training techniques

Ground School

25 hours instructor rating ground school covering:

  • principles of learning and techniques of instruction;
  • preparation and use of lesson plans;
  • techniques for preparatory ground instruction, pre-flight briefings, in-flight instruction, and post-flight debriefings;
  • theory of flight;
  • aircraft flight manuals and aircraft operating limits;
  • pilot decision-making concepts; and
  • use of the Transport Canada resources

The flight times and ground school requirements listed above are the minimum requirements to obtain a Flight Instructor Rating. On average a student will require more time to achieve the proficiency necessary to pass the flight test.

We recommend budgeting for 45 to 60 hours ground school and 35 hours of flight training.
